About to get a big storm in the Twin Cities. And right now it's starting to get that pre-rain, dirt, water on asphalt smell. LOVE IT!!!

Re: storm
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 3:53 PMoh that smell! i can almost smell it just by thinking about it.
my boyfriend works at an environmental center. its a really big place with a lake full of fish, giant organic gardens, pine rockland, etc. ive been privileged to be there on really rainy days. we have to huddle under one of the chicki huts to stay dry and that wet soil smell pervades the air. i also love to watch rain coming down on plants...its so soothing (i hate that word but nothing else comes to mind) and of course the sound of it as well. theres almost nothing better than hanging out under one of the chickis, slightly damp from racing the rain and smoking a bowl while the skies open up around you. *sigh* -

Re: storm
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 4:11 PMactually we are now under a tornado warning. A cell touched down a little north of here. It was kind of eerie, as soon as I posted...the sirens went off. The Strom God was listening. LOL!!! -

Re: storm
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 4:31 PMa few. The worst was when I was about 10 or so. It came right through the Metro area, pretty unusual here. A tree went through my neighbors house. It does sound like a train. It gets really calm and the sky turns green. Soo Spooky. My friends and spent the whole next day surveying the damage in our neighborhood, (NE Mpls). Amazing, there was an overturned car right in front of our house.
Lights, blankets, and get in the basement if you are in the path. Never been through a Hurricane, what's that like? -

Re: storm
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 5:09 PMthe sky turns green? i cant even imagine that.
well, it showers on and off before a hurricane hits. the air is charged with an electrical vibe. (kinda like right before a lightning storm hits) were told to stock up on candles, batteries, water, food, duct tape for windows, etc. (and like good little consumers we obey)
then it hits. its like a giant storm and theres an eye where it calms down for a while (false sense of security) and then it starts again. sounds very similar. trees are uprooted, etc. the streets are flooded for a little while. after hurricane andrew (i was about 12 or so) the power was out for about 2 weeks in my neighborhood. i thought the whole affair was pretty boring.
my bestfriend lived in a place that got hit very hard. she, her mother and sister had to huddle under the kitchen sink while the rest of their house blew away! there are no basements here in miami. (im sure she didnt find it boring in the least :)
